If you're gay and lucky enough to live in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, or Maine, gay marriages can now be legally performed and recognized by these states. Although New York, Washington D.C., and Rhode Island legally recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere, gay marriages still cannot be legally performed within these states. As usual, the U.S. is dragging its feet and falls way behind other countries who have legalized gay marriages, including Canada, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Spain, and South Africa. This writer was taken completely by surprise when Proposition 8 was overturned in California, since California has usually been the frontrunner in innovative, liberal movements in the past. I was hit with another surprise when Iowa voted to legalize gay marriage...IOWA...midwestern America! Way to go, Iowa!!!!
